Talking To Your Kids About Moving in Calgary AB or elsewhere in Canada

If you are just moving places in Calgary AB or elsewhere in Canada, for the first time and with children, it can be tricky to explain to them the nature of their first move and why its occurring. Usually children simply don’t understand why a move should take place and don’t feel particularly excited to leave the only home they’ve known, this is completely understandable, especially given how important security can be in the early stages of a person’s life. However, a move doesn’t have to be an experience the child will remember negatively, in fact if approached correctly, a move can be an exciting new progression in a child’s life. To help you ease the stress of this transition, below are some helpful tips to ease the mind of the child, and to make sure the move is smooth and painless:

• Walk around the house with your child the day of the move, this is an excellent opportunity to get some closure and full allow the child to take in what is happening. Saying goodbye is hard, but when given enough time it can be very therapeutic.

• Be straightforward with them, by being positive and relaxed about the move and having straightforward answers, the child can be confident knowing that you are ok with the realities of a move, and that will give them a great amount of confidence moving forward.

• React appropriately dependent on the child’s age. Children of various stages in their development react to this kind of news in different ways. Younger children can become rebellious whereas older children or teenagers might express concern about finding new friends, so it’s important to be considerate of your child’s specific needs.

• Give it time – by telling your children about the move long before it occurs, you are giving them time to absorb the information and think about the transition, this way it wont be so jarring for them when it finally happens, it will also give you sufficient time to think of ways to get them excited for the big move!

• Discuss room plans and all of the fun ways that their lives will change. This is an extremely interesting way to let children express themselves and gives them some control over the process, making it a more approachable prospect.

• Letting children pack allows them to feel involved with the move and demystifies it for them, it helps reinforce the fact that all of their belonging are not gone for good and will be waiting for them when they arrive at your new home in Calgary.

• Expand your horizons, once you’ve finally moved, it’s interesting for the children to be able to see the new things that your hometown can offer you, and doing fun things will be a great way to get children excited about your new location in Calgary AB or elsewhere in Canada.

There’s a lot to worry about when moving your home, but by far the most important part of the change is to consider the well being of your loved ones, and with these helpful tips, the big move should become an exciting moment for your child, and not one of dread and uncertainty.
