The most efficient move is one that isn’t bogged down with clutter, junk and unwanted items. Decluttering before your move will make your outgoing move to or from Calgary, AB or elsewhere in Canada cheaper and faster, and your incoming move more satisfying.
Easier said than done, right? We rounded up the experts’ best tips on how to declutter your Calgary home before a move.
Respect your new space
Moving into a new space in Calgary is a great opportunity to start fresh. Think of your new home as a clean slate. You don’t want to dump a bunch of clutter into it, do you? Peter Walsh, best-selling author and professional organizer, says a move is a great opportunity to re-evaluate your possessions and weed out the old, broken and unwanted things that are just taking up space.
“If you overload the space that you have, if you fill it with more stuff than it can reasonably hold, you’re not treating the space with honor and respect,” Walsh said.
The best part is all of the hassle is done by the time you’re moving into your new home in Calgary. And unpacking will take a lot less time.
Give yourself time, keep it simple, and don’t overthink it
Professional organizer Grace Brooke, advises clients to go room by room, take it slow, and build in rest periods.
“Begin the downsizing process weeks or even months before your move,” she says. Sort things into “keep,” “give” and “trash” piles, putting only practical, useful and extremely meaningful things in the “keep” pile.
Don’t just reorganize, de-own
To truly declutter, you have to go beyond organizing and re-organizing, says Joshua Becker, author of Simplify and Clutterfree With Kids.
“Too many people spend a great deal of time, money and effort in organizational strategies, when you’re better off getting rid of unnecessary possessions,” Becker says.
Simply reorganizing doesn’t benefit anyone else (as giving and donating does), doesn’t address the issue that we simply buy too much, and doesn’t force us to re-evaluate our buying habits and change our ways.
Share the load
Don’t try to handle a big, pre-move decluttering project by yourself. If you have children, give them responsibility for decluttering their own spaces before the family’s move.

Let your donation box “age”
Here’s a great tip from Moving Insider: There are going to be things that you’re uncertain about — should you keep it? Should you ditch it? Put these things in a box and set them in an out-of-the-way corner and let it “age.”
If a month goes by and you don’t go hunting for anything in the box, it’s usually safe to donate the whole thing.
And you’ll probably find it unpleasant to put the clutter back in your home after you’ve enjoyed less cluttered rooms, making it easier to say goodbye to your clutter box – just in time for your move.
