Relocating to a drastically different area can be quite a jarring experience, and is a move that is quite common in a city such as Calgary, AB or other cities in Canada, which has almost immediate access to the prairies. But in order to make the big move, there’s some preparation you need to do in order to make the transition as smooth as possible. The following are some tips to make your move to the country a little less of a hassle:
- Stock up on supplies – One of the main differences between the city and countryside is the amount of accessibility; cities inherently have a greater variety of stores open at more flexible hours. In the country however, you might have to rely on one or two stores to get all of your supplies, and a number of unexpected problems such as inclement weather could interfere with your access to these stores. So an extremely important rule is to always stock up on any supplies you might need, having extra never hurts, which is where your neighbours come in…
- Get to know people – One thing about moving to the country from Calgary, which can be difficult for city-dwellers to grasp, is the general lack on anonymity that comes with living in a small town, in short, everyone knows everyone. Something that comes with this is the reliance that people have on each other, the lack of access to resources as well as the general harshness of living in a more “untouched” region ensures that people help each other out, so embrace this new way of life and don’t hold onto your anonymity too much.
- Learn some skills – This is perhaps an obvious one, but is worth emphasizing. The ability to fix your own problems and get physical tasks done as efficiently as possible is inherently a ‘country skill’, developed out of years of necessity. It is often said that upon arriving in the prairies, city-folk assume they know the basic skills necessary for living in a rural area, but very few actually have the experience to back that up, so practice, practice, practice, and consult your neighbour should you get stuck!
- Get used to driving – One thing about living in a city is that it’s not always ideal to drive, parking can be expensive, traffic can slow you down and it’s often just generally not cost effective. On the other hand, rural areas demand a car to get anywhere, so it’s worth considering how this will work out, if you have a family how will you divide the access to the car? How will you get home if you’ve had one too many drinks? How will your children get to school? These are all valid concerns, which are worth taking into consideration when you finally make the switch.
While moving to the prairies isn’t for everyone, it can be an incredibly rewarding if you learn to embrace all of the factors that come with it, the tips provided above are not everything you’d need to adjust to such a big change in your life, but if you follow these guidelines, it should make the transition for both yourself and your family much easier, and in turn, much more rewarding.
