When packing up your household in anticipation of a residential move to or from Calgary, AB or elsewhere in Canada, there are so many important things to remember: Label clearly! Color code! Wrap breakables! Don’t pack boxes too heavily, pack for the rooms you’re moving into, not the rooms you’re moving out of. But one of your most important boxes during your move is the “Open First Box.”
Your Open First Box is your go-to place when you arrive at your new home and begin your unpacking. Before you unpack the boxes of dishes, you’ll need a few plates, glasses, a few forks and maybe a coffee cup or two. Having a few essentials within easy reach during unpacking will save you time and sanity.
At the onset of your packing, label a box “Open First” and fill it with the essentials you’ll need while unpacking. You’ll need tape, scissors, toilet paper and paper towels. Beyond that, use this list to decide what you need in your Open First Box.

- Box cutter

- Extension cord
- Paper towels
- A lighter
- Chargers for your cell phone, laptop and other devices
- First aid kit – someone is sure to need a Band-Aid. And don’t forget your favorite pain reliever!
- Small pad of paper and a couple of pens – for making lists!
- Bathroom essentials – toiletries for use before you can get the bathroom boxes unpacked. Soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrush, razor and deodorant
- Medications
- A set of sheets for each bed
- Towels
- Shower curtain and rings – if the shower in your new home doesn’t have a door
- A set of kitchen utensils for each member of your family
- A drinking glass for each member of your family
- Can opener & corkscrew
- Pet food and dishes, leash, crate and bed
- Coffee maker, coffee & cups
- Garbage bags
- Light bulbs
- Cleaning supplies
- File folder of important documents – put this together before your move. Include all moving company paperwork, info on utility turn-ons, closing documents, birth certificates and school enrollment documents, and copies of everyone’s driver’s licenses.
